Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey and former presidential candidate, delivered a historic speech on the Senate floor, setting a new record for the longest Senate address. Speaking for over 25 hours, Booker denounced former President Donald Trump’s policies on Social Security, education, health care, and immigration.
Booker began his speech at 7 p.m. on Monday, declaring his intention to speak for as long as he was physically able. His speech continued late into Tuesday, surpassing Senator Strom Thurmond’s 24-hour-and-18-minute filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 at 7:19 p.m. Cheers erupted in the Senate chamber as Booker surpassed Thurmond’s record.
“To hate him is wrong, and maybe my ego got too caught up that if I stood here, maybe, maybe, just maybe, I could break this record of the man who tried to stop the rights upon which I stand,” Booker remarked. “I’m not here though because of his speech. I’m here despite his speech. I’m here because as powerful as he was, the people were more powerful.”
At 4:20 p.m., Booker had already surpassed Senator Ted Cruz’s 21-hour-and-19-minute speech against the Affordable Care Act in 2013. By the time he concluded shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, his speech had lasted more than 25 hours. He closed with a quote from the late civil rights leader John Lewis: “He said for us to go out and cause some good trouble, necessary trouble, to redeem the soul of our nation. I want you to redeem the dream. Let’s be bold in America.”
Tens of thousands tuned in via livestreams to watch Booker’s marathon speech. The senator criticized Trump’s budget cuts to federal agencies, immigration restrictions, and rollbacks on social programs, calling for bold action to protect democracy and the rights of Americans.
